Valaquenta by KateKaz Valaquenta by KateKaz
An initial poster for my thesis project: Turning J. R. R. Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion' into a graphic novel. This is now an older illustration, but my interest in the project still stands and you can see the first twenty pages of my efforts here in my Silmarillion gallery: [link]

Done completely in Photoshop CS4, spring 2010

The Silmarillion and its characters belong to the Tolkien estate

PS. Thanks :icondjkirkland: for showing me how to turn tricks in Photoshop. He is pretty awesome at hustling digital art, so go check him out!

This project of yours is staggering and amazing. Are there more out there than these 20 pages? Is there a graphic novel for us to buy? If not will you make more pages?

You officially rock for drawing all this Silmarillion art <3 It's a pity Melkor didn't stay one of the official Valar long enough to get painted on this group picture XD But at least he's in your comic, so all is fine XD

Yeah, he just had to go and ruin EVERYTHING. But glad you like regardless :)

He probably just decided it would be a boring book if someone didn't go and ruin EVERYTHING, so he decided to take onto himself this thankless job XDDD Ok, kidding, I think he had quite some fun in the end. Just curious, what colours did you envision for him, in your comics he's obviously black and white, but it can imply more than just white hair and white skin.

Interesting question! I actually imagine him starting off as more light-colored with the dark inverted eyes and then deteriorating over time in a darker palette until his light pupils are all he has left. As far as colors go, I would associate him with warmer colors (oranges and reds probably)
